The rendered page
The fixture below is rendered on its own, the way quarto render examples/placement.qmd --to html renders it. This page frames that output rather than reproducing it.

title: "quarto-index placement probe"
# A table of contents on purpose: Quarto copies a heading's contents into the
# sidebar, so an anchor id that stays inside a heading appears twice in the
# page and a locator resolves to the sidebar copy. The heading marks below
# probe that, and the TOC also lists the generated index section, which the
# extension claims and this fixture checks.

# Marks the renderer moves
A locator must point at its mark wherever the rendered page ends up putting
it, and the locators of one entry must be numbered in the order the marks are
written — not in the order they happen to land on the page. The same term is
marked three times below: in a section heading, inside a table cell, and
inside a footnote, whose text a reader finds at the foot of the page rather
than where the reference sits.
## A [widget]{.index} in a heading
Body text under that heading.
| Part | Note |
|---|---|
| A [widget]{.index} in a table cell | the second column |
A footnote carries the third one.[^one]
[^one]: A [widget]{.index} in a footnote.
A mark that already carries an id of the author's own keeps it, and the index
links to that id instead of minting one: [gadget]{#my-gadget .index}.
## Both a [sprocket]{.index} and a [flange]{.index} in one heading
Two marks in one heading need two anchors: one anchor shared between them
would send two index entries to a single place.
## A [doohickey]{#my-doohickey .index} with the author's id, in a heading
The author's id must survive — relocated out of the heading — because an id
that stays inside is copied into the sidebar with the rest of the heading.
## About a [contraption]{#my-contraption .index see="widget"}
A cross-reference mark carries no locator, but an id it carries in a heading
would be copied into the sidebar all the same, so it relocates too.
## A [gizmo]{.index} heading with a note^[the note marks a [thingamajig]{.index} of its own]
The heading's own mark anchors after the heading; the note's mark renders
with the note at the foot of the page, and its anchor must stay there.
